Artur Cavaco Paulo has just been awarded the Jiangsu Friendship Award for his work for the development of Jiangsu Province in China. The award also values the collaboration of the International Research Laboratory in Textile and Bioprocess in Fibers, involving in particular the Universities of Minho and Jiangnan, in eastern Asian.
"It's a recognition to the excellence of the science produced in Minho and Portugal," says Artur Cavaco Paulo. This is the main prize that the Jiangsu government - a region of 75 million people - awards every year to foreigners for their exceptional contributions to the local development, and their efforts in the promotion of exchange and cooperation in economy, science and culture.
Born in Beja, Artur Cavaco Paulo has a degree in Chemistry from the University of Lisbon, a master's degree in Textile Technology and a PhD in Engineering - Chemical Textile, both from UMinho, where he has taught since 1990. Artur Cavaco Paulo is an associate professor with aggregation at the School of Engineering and also coordinator of the Research Group in Bioprocess and Bionanotechnology at the Centre of Biological Engineering.
In 2005 he was also awarded with the "Incentive to Excellence" prize from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and has led several national and international research projects. Professor Cavaco Paulo also co-founded the International Network on Polymer and Fiber Biotechnology, and is a member of the Society of Dyers and Colorists (UK) and the Cell Division of the American Chemical Society (USA), among others. He has about 300 scientific articles and is on the editorial board of the journals "Coloration Technology" and "Biocatalysis and Biotransformations".
