Anabela Martins is a new executive board member of the World Federation of Culture Collections

Anabela Martins, the Quality Manager of MUM, has been appointed as Executive Board member of the World Federation of Culture Collections after the 14th International Conference on Culture Collections held in Singapore from 17th to 22nd July.
The WFCC is a Multidisciplinary Commission of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) and a Federation within the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS).

The WFCC is concerned with the collection, authentication, maintenance and distribution of cultures of microorganisms and cultured cells. Its aim is to promote and support the establishment of culture collections and related services, to provide liaison and set up an information network between the collections and their users, to organise workshops and conferences, publications and newsletters and work to ensure the long term perpetuation of important collections.

The Federation has an Executive Board and works through a series of committees. It was established in the 60’s and currently covers 726 public service collections in 75 countries and regions which provide access to more than 2.5 million microorganisms.

Micoteca da Universidade do Minho (MUM) was established in 1996 and in 13th September 2001 became an Affiliate Collection of WFCC and its Director, Nelson Lima, served the WFCC Executive Board from 2007-2010. Since 2011, MUM is a certified ISO 9001 culture collection for storage, preservation and supply filamentous fungal strains, and currently is high involved with the ISO technical committee 276 on the new standards for Biobanks operation. It is a matter of record that MUM’s is committed to WFCC activities.

The appointment of Anabela Martins, as new member of the WFCC Executive Board for the next 3 years, is a recognition of the work done by MUM and, in special, by the MUM Quality Manager on QA/QC issues.
