Today the Federal University of Pernambuco (Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil) paid tribute to Prof. Nelson Lima, Director of the Micoteca da Universidade do Minho (MUM), and currently visiting professor in the post-graduate programme in Agricultural Microbiology at Federal University of Lavras (Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil) and President of European Culture Collections’ Organisation (ECCO), in recognition of his dedication to developing collaboration in the fields of Mycology and ex situ preservation of fungal genetic resources.
The ceremony took place during the activities marking the 60 years of the Department of Mycology and Micoteca URM Culture Collection and was attended by Federal University of Pernambuco Rector, Prof. Anísio Brasileiro, who along with the Director of the Department of Mycology and Micoteca URM, Prof. Cristina Motta, paid tribute to Prof. Nelson Lima.
In addition, Prof. Cledir Santos, Researcher level A from CNPq-Brazil, professor in the post-graduate programme in Agricultural Microbiology at Federal University of Lavras and Quality Manager at Micoteca UMinho, won a “Certificate of Gratitude” by his dedication to the Mycology Studies in Pernambuco State-Brazil.
On this day also the historical agreement of cooperation between Micoteca UMinho and the Micoteca URM was signed. Micoteca UMinho through its Director, has actively contributed for many years to the development of Mycology, and he most recently gave a high level of support for the refurbishment of the new premises of the Micoteca URM through the FINEP project and FACEPE funding which were inaugurated today, with the certification process ISO 9001:2008. This allows the Micoteca URM to be the first culture collection in Brazil and throughout Latin America certified at this level.
Several research projects have been developed between the two sides across the Atlantic, and there has been constant collaboration in intensive and advanced training of researchers on the post-graduate programme in Biology of Fungi. Prof. Lima also gave a conference entitled, "Opportunities and Threats for Culture Collections Certified" as part of the ceremony.
