Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) carried out an international evaluation of Portuguese scientific research and technological development units. The evaluation, under the guidance of the European Science Foundation (ESF), is now complete and CEB was awarded with the EXCELLENT grade.
“The Centre of Biological Engineering at U. Minho serves as an example of how Engineering Sciences can fruitfully be paired with the Biosciences, and it can serve as a role model for similar Developments in Portugal.
The research topics chosen by the unit are well selected, and together they constitute a platform for Scientific and Commercial Development of Portugal within Sustainable Technologies as based on a combination of Engineering with the various topics of Biosciences.
Already at the present time the unit's activities are well known in the international community, and judging by all the indicators available - publications, patents, cooperation with both the Clinic and with Industry – the centre has a unique position. The profile is broad, but the research topics fit nicely together, and the center addresses problems of considerable scientific and commercial interest.”
(From the overall conclusions of the “Final Panel Consensus Report”).
The total annual funding granted for the next 6 years is 1 015 060 €.
