Abstract

The project aims at the production of bioethanol and CO2 sequestration by microalgae accumulating high amoutns of starch, grown in an oscillatory flow continuous bioreactor. In particular, this project will: • Develop and implement an oscillatory flow reactor at a pilot scale for the cultivation of microalgae accumulating high concentrations of starch; • Evaluate an compare different methods for disintegrating microalgae cells aiming at starch extraction; • Maximize ethanol production in continuous bioreactors containing cells immobilized in low cost carriers (e.g. obtained from agro-industrial by-products; • Develop methodologies to valorize process by-products.
