Piglets commonly develop diarrhea 3-10 days after they weaning, a clinical condition commonly known as porcine Post- Weaning Diarrhea (PWD). Since entero toxigenic E. coli (ETEC) strains, that produce enterotoxins, are by far the most common and important cause of PWD, this group of pathogenic E. coli has been reported as an important problematic agent affecting weaned piglets.
The excessive use of antibiotics used to treat these infections raises growing concerns of antimicrobial resistance.
This project will develop two novel formulations for the control of piglet diarrhea and disinfection of the facilities from ETEC, to be used combined: a bacteriophage-derived product to spray the facilities where piglets are housed during this critical period (weaning and post-weaning) and suspensions of microcapsules comprising endolysins and organic acids to be administered orally to the piglets.
The project will be developed by ALS-CONTROLVET, in collaboration with research centres from the Universities of Minho (CEB) and Vila Real (CECAV-UTAD). The project fits priority domains and shall have a strong economic impact in Portugal and abroad, in the animal production sector, due to the development of a technologically innovative solution to reduce ETEC infections in weaned piglets.
