Abstract

The variety of waste residues and wastewater sources combined with the high energetic yield of hydrocarbons, makes hydrocarbon-contaminated wastes a potential candidate for valorization in industrial-scale anaerobic digestion for biogas production. One of the major barriers preventing industrial scale-up of hydrocarbon anaerobic digestion is the extensive degradation time, reaching periods of years before complete biodegradation.
