Scientific Coordination Committee

BIOSYSTEMS (former BioPSEg) is a research group at the Centre of Biological Engineering of the University of Minho using competences in systems biotechnology and bioengineering to foster the development of a knowledge-based bio-economy, leading to new added-value products and processes.

The BIOSYSTEMS group research activities have as guiding streamline in Bioprocess Engineering and Computational BioSystems aiming at generating, applying and disseminating knowledge and transfer technology in Life Sciences & Biotechnological, Chemical & Environmental Processes. The structure of the group was established to address the challenges associated, while taking into account the competences on systems biotechnology and bioengineering.

The main research themes of the BIOSYSTEMS are:

  • Anaerobic Digestion
  • Biomedical Text Mining
  • Bioprocess Modelling
  • Biotechnological application of Yarrowia lipolytica
  • Control of Fermentation Processes
  • Mathematical and Computational Tools for Large-Scale Microbial Modelling
  • Merlin - In Silico Metabolic Engineering Platform
  • Monitoring of activated sludge processes
  • OptFlux - In Silico Metabolic Engineering Platform
  • Other Applications of QIA in Biotechnology
  • Protozoa in Wastewater Treatment Processes
  • Software Sensors
  • Strategies of oxygen transfer rate improvement to microbial cultures: hyperbaric bioreactors
  • Synthetic biology approaches for engineering new pathways, functions and organisms
  • Synthetic biology sensors
  • Systems Biology of recombinant microorganisms
  • Up-grading of agro-industrial wastes

Being so, the group is divided into 4 sub-groups, each one corresponding to a main scientific domain.
The group research labs are:
