Ana Júlia Cavaleiro, researcher at Bioresources, Bioremediation and Biorefinery (BRIDGE) group from CEB was awarded with Best Oral Presentation (2nd place) at the 12th International Workshop on Environment and Alternative Energy. Organized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European partners - European Space Agency (ESA) and Center for Pollution Prevention Program (C3P) – the event was dedicated to "Increasing Space Mission Resiliency through Sustainability". The workshop took place at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida (USA), October 21-24, 2014.
Ana Júlia presented the work entitled "Engineered bioremediation of deep hydrocarbon-contaminated sites", focused on the use of anaerobic microorganisms for the clean-up of soil and groundwater contaminated with aliphatic hydrocarbons, the main constituents of crude oil or petroleum products. Due to the relevance of this meeting and of the work presented, the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) awarded Ana Júlia Cavaleiro with a travel grant.
