The Center of Biological Engineering (CEB) joins the group of major Portuguese Research Centers implementing a policy of intramural funding for research projects. CEB Intramural funding aims to generate preliminary data that can then be leveraged to secure external funding from government agencies, foundations, or industry partners. CEB intramural research projects evaluation is based on international panels provided by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) nationwide calls, and will select the best evaluated projects, within CEB different research themes, that were under the cut-off line for funding by FCT. These projects will have a 1 year duration, with the possibility to be extended to 2 years, and will include Human Resources & consumables budget, as well as access to all CEB equipment and support staff.
On the 2024 call, projects were based on the FCT 6th edition Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEEC). The selected research projects were:
CEBIMF.2024A: Implementation of hair bulb in vitro and ex vivo models to test potential antichemically induced alopecia preventive strategies (PI: Teresa Matamá)
CEBIMF.2024B: Addressing Staphylococcus epidermidis virulence: from biological pathways characterization to target discovery (PI: Ângela França)
CEBIMF.2024C: Development of eco-innovative bio-based dyes/inks for industrial applications (PI: Tatiana Aguiar)
CEBIMF.2024D: Formation and control of inter-kingdom biofilms in drinking water systems (PI: Lúcia Chaves)
CEBIMF.2024E: Pharmaceuticals degradation by Bio Fenton reaction using iron-clay catalysts (PI: Bruna Silva)
CEBIMF.2024F: Cello-oligosaccharides: production using novel biocatalysts and evaluation of
their prebiotic potential (PI: Sara Silvério)
CEBIMF.2024G: A phage-based method for rapid and early detection of Paenibacillus larvae in
hives (PI: Ana Oliveira)
This CEB initiative is expected to promote the career development of younger PhD researchers, by providing them opportunities to lead their own projects, publish papers, and build their professional reputation.
