General Information
Biotechnology, understood as the integration of Life Sciences with Engineering, is an area that has had extraordinary scientific advances (in Protein Engineering, Genetic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Biorefineries, Nanotechnology), and that it is expected to continue in strong expansion, making it imperative to train advanced specialists with the ability to translate these scientific and technological advances in this area into the productive sector in a sustainable environment of humanity and improvement of its quality of life.
Biotechnology is not exactly a
new area, it has significantly contributed over the years to the well-being and
development of society, we can cite as an example insulin in the biomedical
area and chymosin in the food area. Currently, Biotechnology presents itself as
a key discipline for the future of Humanity. With different applications, from
biomedical, environmental, agro-food, industrial, and of course genetic
engineering, Biotechnology is essential to make the transition to the Bioeconomy,
that is, a sustainable and efficient economy in the use of resources. Today's
society faces major sustainability challenges due to the strong growth of the
world population, climate change, and the depletion of fossil fuels. Biotechnology
is one of the key disciplines to respond to these challenges. Therefore, the
expectation for the future of Biotechnology is for unlimited applications.
The Department of Biological Engineering has a strong tradition in training in this area, benefits from the strong connection to the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB), a centre with a high national and international reputation in terms of research in the field of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, classified by the FCT as Excellent, and present in several networks and infrastructures in this area, as well as the connection to the Portuguese and International business fabric. Also noteworthy is the entrepreneurial aspect of this Centre with several spin-offs working in the field of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Business and institutional partners often receive students to carry out the dissertation. This is annual and can be conducted in an industrial environment and/or divided into research dissertation and internship. It should also be noted the network of international contacts that allow students to enjoy existing ERASMUS+ and ERASMUS Placement protocols.
In this sense, the Master Program in Biotechnology is intended for the advanced training of Graduates, is contextualized with the needs of the market, and presents beyond the interface with Engineering, a highly practical and laboratory component covering the comprehensive areas of biotechnological application, namely biomedical, agri-food, industrial and environmental.
